The hotel and restaurant has gained a reputation for freshly prepared and home produced food, including its home baking, smoking and curing; crafts which have been passed down through the centuries.
We dined on a Sunday evening. Holding a reputation as the best Sunday lunch in the county, booking is essential at Callow Hall. The Restaurant is featured in the Good Food Guide and for many years, has held a high 2 Rosette award with the AA.
For starters, we ordered a classic prawn cocktail and haddock fishcake with a pea puree and aged balsamic – a secret Callow Hall recipe. Make sure you arrive at the restaurant hungry as the portions are plentiful and so tasty it’s hard to put down your fork, so leave room for your main…
We both ordered beef which came with a choice of accompaniments and followed this with a warm chocolate fondant with salted caramel and Bailey’s ice cream and a more refreshing sorbet.
Pure food indulgence in a luxurious venue. (£32.00 per person for three courses plus coffee and petit fours).
If staying in the hotel, breakfast is a must with home-made sausages, home-cured bacon and home-smoked salmon, in-house jams and home-made bread.
And if you arrive early enough, be sure to book in for Derbyshire afternoon tea as you sit in the beautiful gardens. (£18.95 per person). Tuck in to a selection of freshly made sandwiches served on brown and white bread – home smoked Scottish salmon, free range egg and cress mayonnaise, Peak District baked ham and cucumber. Follow this with warm freshly baked scones – fruit and plain with clotted cream, farmhouse butter and strawberry jam. And finish with fresh fruit tartlets – light crisp pastry cases filled with custard and fresh seasonal fruits: “Battenberg” – light Genoese sponge covered in golden marzipan; Soft baked meringues sandwiched with fresh cream; Our own Callow Hall fruitcake, baked with marzipan, rum poached apricots and cherries; Caroline’s – fresh cream choux buns topped with chocolate; Lemon Posset – set lemon with confit lemon. (Add champagne for £6 extra per person).
